Who supported and backed Mugabe to come to power?
Communist China. "They supplied him with enough weapons to eventually force the Rhodesian minority ruled white government at the time to relinquish power."

That's not all, reporters should keep their distance from Grace Zimbabawe, while on a shopping trip in Hong Kong, where her daughter Bona Mugabe is a university student, Mrs Mugabe ordered her bodyguard to assault a Times photographer named Richard Jones outside her luxury hotel. She then joined in the attack, punching Jones repeatedly in the face while wearing diamond encrusted rings, causing him cuts and abrasions. She was subsequently granted immunity from prosecution 'under Chinese diplomatic rules' because of her status as Mugabe's wife.
The Mugabe's have also purchased a house in Hong Kong thought to be a safe house in case they need to make a quick get away if political unrest in Zimbabwe force them out of office. International pressure is building and Robert Mugabe is banking on China bailing him out, Mugabe better start thinking fast if he wants to survive when the walls come crumbling down."
Was the last election in Zimbabwe fair? No.
