ALTRUISM GOOD SCIENCE

Article from Hearthmath Research Institute.

Altruism

Do acts of kindness and generosity enhance our health, increase our longevity and make us happier? Can heart-directed altruism reduce stress? Research shows when we act in other people’s behalf, we feel better, more secure and experience less stress.

Altruism’s Physiological Basis: Using MRI scans, scientists have identified specific regions of the brain that are very active during deep and compassionate emotional states and determined that neurochemicals factor into altruism.

Institute for Research on Unlimited Love President Stephen Post said of this portion of the brain: "This is the care-and-connection part of the brain. States of joy and delight come from giving to others. It doesn’t come from any dry action, where the act is out of duty in the narrowest sense."

Dr. J. Andrew Armour, a leading neurocardiologist on IHM’s Scientific Advisory Board, found that the heart contains cells that synthesize and release hormones such as epinephrine, also called adrenaline, and dopamine, among others. It was discovered that the heart also secretes oxytocin, commonly referred to as the "love" or "bonding" hormone. Concentrations of oxytocin produced in the heart are as high as those found in the brain.

When you are altruistic – helping someone – your oxytocin level goes up, which helps relieve stress. Altruistic behavior also may trigger the brain’s reward circuitry – the feel-good chemicals such as dopamine and endorphins. The hormonal benefits of good deeds, however, depend on the genuine intent of acts of altruism.

Research shows altruistic people are healthier and live longer. In a study that followed over 400 women for 30 years, researchers found 52% of those who did not engage in volunteer work experienced a major illness, compared with only 36% of those who volunteered. In a British poll of volunteers, half of those surveyed said their health had improved over the course of volunteering. One in five said volunteering had even helped them lose weight.
Another large study found a 44% reduction in early death among those who volunteered – more significant even than exercising four times a week. An investigation conducted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research found older people who are helpful to others reduce their risk of dying by nearly 60% compared to peers who provide neither practical help nor emotional support to relatives, neighbors or friends.
Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.
– James Matthew Barrie

According to an article published in 2009 in the Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Science at Dartmouth University, "Altruism promotes deeper positive social integration, distraction from self-preoccupation, enhanced meaning and purpose, a more active lifestyle, and the presence of positive emotions such as kindness that displace harmful negative emotional states. Thus, it is entirely possible to assert that altruism enhances mental and physical health."

Cultivate Altruism with HeartMath. The heart-focused techniques of the HeartMath System help people align themselves more fully with core values and to actualize more care and compassion in their lives. Practicing these tools also has been linked to beneficial changes in hormones that profoundly affect our health, happiness and longevity and increase our resilience for dealing with today’s challenges. By integrating HeartMath practices in your life, you can reduce your stress and increase your generosity from the heart. The Free Services section of IHM’s Web site offers Tools for Well-Being for adults and children of all ages. (Audio available also).

Benefits of Altruism

* Promotes emotional, physical, mental and spiritual health.
* Boosts your self-esteem and confidence.
* Increases resilience and longevity.
* Helps you be more accepting of gifts and experiencing appreciation.
* Provides a way to express your feelings about people or issues.
* Builds connections and relationships with others.
* Helps you increase knowledge about causes and issues for which you are altruistic.
* Raises your consciousness about the world around you.

Important Note: It is equally important to take care of yourself as you care for others and to give from a sense of heart care rather than duty. If we consistently give out of a sense of overcare, we can find ourselves feeling resigned and burned out. Use your heart intelligence for heart-balanced altruism.

Editor’s note: This IHM revised newsletter article, originally published in 2006, remains equally valid in 2011.

BRITISH POLICE LIED

Here is the evidence that the British Police Force lied to the peaceful protestors on the 26th of March, 2011.

It really is time that the human rights lawyers take on the police force and defend the people from police and government oppression.

The Passing of José Argüelles

José Argüelles passed away on March 23, 2011 (2 Imix) and I would like to write a few words as a recognition of the very important contributions he made to our understanding of the Mayan calendar especially through his book The Mayan Factor: Path beyond technology. This work was published by Barbara Hand Clow at Bear and Co as part of a preparation for the Harmonic Convergence event, August 16-17, 1987. It became a great source of inspiration for myself as well as for many others and for a few years I regarded it almost as a bible to Mayan cosmology. In this book Argüelles introduced a few very radical thoughts for the first time: 1/ The shifts in the Mayan calendar and especially the Long Count provides for an understanding of human history. 2/ What is important in the Mayan calendar are the non-astronomical cycles of 260 and 360 days and 3/ The energies of the Tzolkin provide a matrix for the evolution of the longer cycles. Although he had forerunners such as Peter Balin, Tony Shearer, and Frank Waters, Argüelles' ideas were groundbreaking and created the necessary opening that allowed for us to realize that the Mayan calendar could be true and then also help us understand the contours of a cosmic plan. The Mayan Factor was a seminal work that at the time was way ahead of the thinking of everyone else. His successful promotion of the Harmonic Convergence event that coincided with a broad spiritual awakening, also led many to conclude that the Mayan calendar had something to say about the spiritual destiny of mankind.

Unfortunately, Argüelles' post-Harmonic Convergence work with the Dreamspell calendar meant the reversal and abandonment of exactly those advances that had been presented in The Mayan Factor. Even if the Thirteen Moon calendar became popular in many parts of the world, it was never recognized as a contribution by any serious student of the Mayan calendar. Moreover, the way it was initially presented brought much confusion. My own criticism and disappointment of this calendar was not so much motivated by the fact that Argüelles broke with Mayan orthodoxy, but more because the calendar he had invented was not transparent and that its origin was kept hidden. This failure should however not cloud the fact that Argüelles was a great pioneer; everyone who today works for a better world through the Mayan calendar, and the guidance this may give us, owes something to Argüelles. It is still possible for us to build on the abovementioned advances from The Mayan Factor and come to understand, in much more detail than was possible then, the underlying patterns of evolution in an increasingly chaotic world. Although Argüelles is known to have liked the idea that the Mayan calendar developed through nine waves, he however never came to live by these. The fact that he passed away on the First Day of the Ninth wave that recently had such a dramatic start thus has significance to me and perhaps also to others and as we go along I think this will clarify further.

Carl Johan Calleman,
Seattle, 3 Imix, the 16th day of the first uaxaclahunkin of the Ninth wave.

Carl Johan Calleman is the author of Solving the Greatest Mystery of Our Time: The Mayan Calendar (Garev 2001), The Mayan Calendar and the Transformation of Consciousness (Bear and Co, 2004) and The Purposeful Universe (Bear and Co, 2009).

I feel a tremendous silence.

May he rest in peace and look forward to his return here when the chaos is over.

The Daily Telegraph report today that the News Corporation as lost 10m users on its social network site 'MySpace' in just four weeks. And it lost a $100 million in the first quarter of last year.

The UK audience halved to 3.3 million monthly visitors in July 2010.

There is that 33 number again, 333 was the 3rd of March 2010, SOPHIA of WISDOM gateway opening.

REAL MEN - SPINELESS MEN

Yesterday we we wrote about SPINELESS MEN.

I often used to say that my Father's generation were the last of the REAL men. Was it because they experienced a war on their soil in Europe? Or was it due to a lack of materialism and comfort zones? You decide.

However, there are far too many spineless men in my generation in the Western world. Its very easy to talk about it, not so easy to do something about it. That takes REAL courage, to stand up and be counted.

I haven’t met a single man or know a single man that as had the guts to take on the dark forces in the outer world.

Shame on the men in the Western world, and especially in England, where they have allowed the people to be oppressed for decades while they were in self-interest. Self-interest is what rotted the Tree of Life and the poor, sick and homeless suffer the consequences of their lack of compassionate action.

Many of the children inherited it as well, because they did not have strong father's to make men of them.

Its also difficult for women that have had strong Father's, to find a match that can hold a candle to them, then the men wonder why they get the sack.

Englishmen can also be lazy in the romance stakes as well, too easy to take a woman for granted.

They complain about not being appreciated. However, what have they done to be appreciated for?

Planes bomb Libya and where are the million man marches

'BAN THE BOMB'.

Why the Image of Spineless Men is Real, read the article about 'Spineless Men'. [1]

The men that helped to create these children, where are they?

Where are the men to protect these children?

27 million children in Child labour, child slavery and poverty.
